Second Life ™ Snippets Is Ending

July 5th, 2008

I have to change this blog as my url, secondlifesnippets, is not allowed under Linden Labs trademark.

There are videos I am going to have to remove when I move over to a new url as the opening of the videos is not allowed under their trademark.

I am also going to have to rework the images as one I used in the banner was taken within Second Life ™ and the “do not allow this use of our map interface”.

We will be switching the blog over to http://www.JACASJOINT.COM which is the name of my group and land. Hope you all will follow.

Stay tuned!

Renting Realities And Second Life ™

June 18th, 2008

I posted a blog not that long ago about an experience I had with renting on another sim. Well I have another story to tell you, different sim, different situation.

The other night I came into Second Life and there was a message from a land owner where I had 2 stores that said that they had sold the sim and my rent would be dealt with in time (not the exact words). I did not get any notice of my content from the stores being returned and when I checked they had not. I also did not receive outstanding rent (I paid weeks ahead). The message that the outstanding rent would be ‘dealt with in time’ did not comfort me.

I checked again last night and no inventory was returned. I contacted the new owner of the sim that said I had to deal with the previous owner. I left a message (he was off line) and no answer.

Tonight I contacted Second Life support. I was lucky to get Leo :) As far as the money owed to me from rent I paid, here is the scoop:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unfortunately, Linden Lab doesn’t enforce or uphold rental agreements between Residents. Please contact the Resident with whom you have a dispute, and request that they make good on the deal. While you may have a valid agreement with another person, Linden Lab is not a party to and cannot resolve your dispute.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

That is directly from the Knowledge base article that Leo directed to me to. I will say I left a comment, but I am sure nothing will happen from it. You can go read it if you wish.

As far as the inventory, Leo transported me to some open land and said it had been returned to my lost and found (can’t remember the term he used) - in a box for each store, basically. They were not there 2 days ago or yesterday.

Anyways, on this piece of land with Leo I could pull out the 2 boxes I had in my inventory that held the items that were in the stores.

Thank the heavens I did get those back!

It absolutely sucks that I may loose the money I paid in rent and SL wipes their hands of any responsibility.

It was absolutely great that Leo helped me at least get my inventory back.

Leo, being Leo, made this experience a little easier to take. Thanks Leo :)

P.S I have rental space on my land and I am going to ensure that in the notecard I provide it clearly states that inventory and outstanding rent will be returned should I sell the land. I certainly have no plans to sell the land but I don’t want anyone else to go through this and want them to know they are secure.

Rock On In Second Life(tm)

June 13th, 2008

I don’t know about you but when I am stressed I have 2 choices, one is feeling “down” and the other is to ‘rock it off’. My choice, if I have one :) is to ‘rock it off’.

In Real Life feeling down is easy - ‘rocking if off’ can be a bit more difficult - or even dangerous - so - where better to do it than in Second Life!

So I come online tonight and one of my fav places - Slaytona - was holding an event and you bet I am there. They have great events, great music, most of all great people. Check them out here:

Slaytona

After the event I was still wanting to ‘rock off’ the stresses so off I went on my bike on my land. I changed my outfit, changed the color and speed of my bike, and cranked the music. Here I am:

Come join me - here most nights :)

If you need to ‘rock it off’ you now know where you can :)

Announcing A Primtionary Event At Jaca’s Joint!

June 12th, 2008

We are planning on holding a “primtionary” event at Jaca’s Joint soon. What is “primtionary” you ask - well think of ‘pictionary’ only instead of using pictures we will create prims, piece by piece an you get to guess what they are as we are building them.

Here is an example.

First creation:

Ok.. what do you think it is - come on tell me :)

Next:

This must give you a better idea :)

A bit more:

Oh you must know from this one LOL - just yell it out (or send me what you think it is through my contact form)

This kind of event is so much fun. There are folks who create the prims, folks who keep track of who guesses right, as there will be prizes for winners, plus we plan to have a DJ and dancing after the event.

If you would like to be a builder in the event, or be notified when the event is being held, leave me a note at my contact form - or - come by and visit me at Jaca’s Joint here:

Look forward to hearing from you and having you at the event!!

Be Careful Where You Rent A Store In Second Life(TM)

June 11th, 2008

As a land owner in SL, and having renters on our land, this is probably not the best subject line I can put up - but I really need to.  This is something I experienced tonight and certainly not anything I would do to anyone who rents land from me and do not want anyone else to experience it.

What happened tonight
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I rented a large store on a sim in SL.  I went in tonight to put up a new product and saw there was a building going up to the front/right of my open area store.  An avatar (name does not matter) came over to me and said they were moving my store.  I asked why and that’s when everything went sideways.
The ‘person’ that first brought me to the sim, and I rented the store from, came over and said that the walls were being moved, and did not like my ‘attitude’.  I asked a few more questions and ‘he’ got angry - as did his partner.  They said I was being “rude” and said basically I had no right to ask anything because it was their land.
I tried to explain that I was just trying to understand as a vendor.  As a vendor I felt I had a right to ask what was being done.  I had an open area store to a stage and I did not want something going in front of the store and stage.  This only made matters worse.
Next thing I know they booted me from the sim, returned all my items, booted me from the group and returned the money I had left in my rental.
Ok, so I got everything back and a refund.  That is good.  But - But - as vendors on another parcel of land we should have some rights when it comes to asking questions of what is happening to our store area. In RL there is no way you could get moved without prior notice and certainly not ”kicked out” with no notice.
I am not naming names here, (although I admit I am tempted but that is just not my style), because that is not as important as it is to tell you not only be careful where you rent - BUT - when you rent to someone understand that they are paying for the area as they rented it and that they do (and should) have a right to ask.  Anyone who rents space in RL certainly would understand this.  In RL you are considered owners of that land until their rental is up.  This is how it should be in SL.
Second Life (TM) (R) - How To Show Your Stuff
May 17th, 2008
When you build items in SL, and you want to sell them, one of the decisions you have to make is how to present them so your product looks good. This is especially important when it comes to clothing. I’ve been using a frame for my clothing but thought there must be a better way, especially when I want to be able to include more than one item. So what we did was take a picture of me wearing an outfit - front and back. This is how it turned out:
We then put the images (textures) on a box, sized it down and made the background invisibel. You can see the side in this photo (though it is so thin it looks rather strange at this angle).
I then placed it in my store. I intend to add “Featured Product” bubble to it but ran out of time last night. So here is the cutout and I’m on the right. Pretty cool huh :)
I invite you to come have a look at Jaca’s Joint
Second Life(TM)(R) - Group Events
May 13th, 2008
One of the benefits of joining a group is the events they put on. Not all Second Life (TM) (R) groups put on events… some groups offer great experiences / adventures (for example - Jaca’s Joint offers pinball, pool, water sports, a cool motorcycle path, etc.). All groups have something special to offer.
Tonight a group I belong to (Slaytona Beach Bikers and Babes) had a “Best In Black” event at their club. (I also have a store on their land and they have incredible motorcycle races.) When I logged in I received a notice about it. At first it sounded like the “Best in Black towel” event. But since I didn’t have a towel, I just changed my hair and clothes to be the best “black” I could be. Here are some pics from the event:
Here is me in my best in black - sure doesn’t look like me does it LOL
No I didn’t win.. but it was lots of fun..great people, great music, great times! So yes come on in and join groups and have some fun!
I belong to around 20 groups so if you want to know some great ones just IM me :)
Second Life (R) (TM) New Feature - Avatar Rendering Cost
May 2nd, 2008
Checked out the blog tonight and here is what is ’snippets’ of what I found.
(quote)
SO! We have a small little experimental feature we want you to know about…
…People are going to build their avatars the way they want. This is great. But, it can also mean potentially disastrous performance for those nearby.
So we chatted and thought, “hey, why not let the people explore this for themselves??” “Let social and group dynamics take effect - and let the Residents see what effect avatars nearby can have on their experience.” Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t. But aren’t you curious to see just how expensive those new boots *really* are?
(end quote)
Announcing (drum roll) “Avatar Rendering Cost”
(quote)
Avatar Rendering Cost is computed based on the relative cost of all those fantabulous features your avatar has hanging off of it.
(end quote)
So from this blog post it is now up to us to to “moderate” our world. My opinion is that even though they say:
(quote)
no, in case you’re wondering- this isn’t an attempt to offload our big responsibility to make the viewer more efficient!
(end quote)
then shouldn’t the bandwidth allow for the 3d art that we are allowed to and do create? Is this not going to create more infighting and, to a degree, discrimination?
What do you think?
